How to Read a Tape Measure
The rule is simple: the longer the line, the bigger the fraction.

A tape measure looks like it has a hundred meaningless lines on it. It does not. There are only five line lengths on a standard imperial tape, and once you know that the longest line is the biggest fraction, the whole thing decodes itself in about a minute.
Below: reading the fractions, the two markings most people never learn (the black diamonds and the red numbers), and the small piece of engineering at the end of the tape that everyone assumes is broken.
The Only Rule You Actually Need
On an imperial tape, line height encodes fraction size. The tallest lines are whole inches and are numbered. The next tallest is the half-inch. Then quarters, then eighths, then the shortest lines of all, sixteenths.
That is the entire system. You never count sixteen tiny lines to work out where you are. You find the nearest tall line you can name and step down from there.
Reading a Measurement in Practice
Say the end of your board lands on a short line, two marks past the 7-inch number and just past a medium line.
Work down the ladder rather than counting from zero. Find the last whole inch, that is 7. Ask whether you are past the half-inch mark: no. Past the quarter: yes. Then count the small marks past the quarter. One eighth-mark past the quarter is three-eighths. A sixteenth past that is seven-sixteenths.
The measurement is 7 and 7/16 inches. Three questions, no counting past four.
- Reduce your fractions. 8/16 is a half. 4/16 is a quarter. Writing 7-8/16 on a board is a good way to cut it wrong later.
- Read straight down. Looking at the tape from an angle shifts the apparent mark by a sixteenth or more. Get your eye directly over the line.
- Mark with a V rather than a line. A pencil line is a sixteenth wide on its own. The point of the V is the measurement.
Why the Metal Hook Wobbles
The hook at the end of every tape measure slides back and forth by a small amount. This is the single most common thing people believe is a defect, and it is deliberate.
The hook moves by exactly its own thickness. When you hook it over the end of a board and pull, it slides out, so the measurement starts at the outside face. When you butt it into the inside of a cabinet and push, it slides in by that same thickness, so the measurement starts at the inside face. One tape, both measurements, both correct.
A hook that has been bent or worn will read wrong. Test it by measuring the same distance hooked and butted. If the two disagree, gently bend the hook back until they match.
For measurements that matter, many trades avoid the hook entirely: start at the 1-inch line, take your reading, then subtract an inch. It removes the hook from the equation completely.
The Black Diamonds and the Red Numbers
Two markings on most tapes go unexplained on the packaging.
Red numbers or red boxes every 16 inches mark standard stud and joist spacing. Framing in most of North America is laid out 16 inches on center, so the red marks let you lay out a wall without doing arithmetic. Some tapes use red every 16 inches and a different color every 24, for the wider spacing used in some roof and floor framing.
Small black diamonds roughly every 19-3/16 inches are truss or joist markers. Dividing a 96-inch sheet of material into five equal bays gives 19.2 inches, and the diamonds mark that spacing. Used where five members are wanted under a standard sheet instead of the six you get at 16-inch centers.

Tapes That Go Finer Than Sixteenths
Some tapes mark thirty-seconds, usually only across the first few inches where fine work happens. The same rule applies: the new shortest line is the smallest fraction. Engineer tapes drop fractions entirely and divide the foot into tenths and hundredths, which is normal on site survey work and confusing everywhere else. Check the first inch of an unfamiliar tape before trusting it.
Metric tapes are simpler. Numbered marks are centimetres, the ten small divisions between them are millimetres, and there are no fractions to reduce. A dual-scale tape carries imperial along one edge and metric along the other.
Things That Quietly Make Your Measurements Wrong
Reading the tape correctly is only part of getting the number right.
- A sagging tape. Past about six or seven feet unsupported, the blade droops and adds length. Support long spans or use the standout, the distance a tape holds itself straight, as your working limit.
- Measuring to the wrong side of the mark. Consistency matters more than which side you pick. Choose one and stay with it across a project.
- A bent hook. Worth checking every few months on a tape that lives in a toolbag.
- Mixing tapes mid-project. Two tapes can disagree by a sixteenth. Cut a whole job with one tape.
