How to Use a Multimeter

A multimeter looks intimidating because the dial has fifteen positions and most people never learn what twelve of them do. For household work you need three: AC volts, DC volts, and continuity. Everything else on that dial belongs to electronics work or to trades you are not doing.
This covers those three, the four tests that account for nearly all home use, and the two mistakes that damage meters.
The Dial and the Sockets
Probes first, because getting them wrong is how meters die. The black probe goes in COM and stays there for everything. The red probe goes in the socket marked VΩmA for voltage, resistance and continuity, which is all you need for the tests below.
There is usually a third socket marked 10A or similar for measuring high current. Moving the red probe there and then touching it across a live circuit creates a near short through the meter. Leave it alone.
Auto-ranging or Manual
Cheaper meters are manual-ranging: the dial has several positions under each symbol, 200, 600 for AC volts, and you must pick one above the value you expect. For a household outlet at 120 V, select 200 V. Choosing too low reads as overload, usually shown as "OL" or a lone 1 on the left of the display.
Auto-ranging meters have one position per function and work the range out themselves. If your dial has a single V~ position rather than several, you have one of these and there is nothing to choose.
Test 1, Is This Outlet Live?
The most common household use, and worth doing carefully because it is the one performed on a live circuit.
- Set the dial to V~ (AC volts), 200 V range if manual.
- Hold each probe by its insulated grip. Never let a finger touch the metal.
- Insert the black probe into the wider slot (neutral) and the red into the narrower slot (hot).
- A working US outlet reads roughly 110–125 V.
- Then test hot to ground. Red in the narrow slot, black in the round hole. That should read about the same. Roughly 120 V hot-to-neutral with near zero hot-to-ground means the outlet is not properly grounded.
For simply confirming whether something is live before you work on it, a non-contact voltage tester is safer and faster, no probes near live metal. A multimeter tells you the actual voltage. A non-contact tester tells you go or no-go, which is usually the question.
Test 2, Is This Battery Any Good?
Set the dial to V⎓ (DC volts). Red probe to the positive terminal, black to negative. Read the number.
The trap is that a battery can show good voltage with no capacity left, because you are measuring with essentially no load. A meter reading is a reasonable screen, not proof.

Test 3. Continuity, and the One Rule
Continuity answers whether a complete path exists through something: is this fuse blown, is this switch actually switching, is this extension lead broken inside.
Set the dial to the Ω or sound-wave symbol. Touch the probes together. The meter should beep and read near zero. That confirms the meter is working and tells you what "connected" looks like.
Then place a probe at each end of whatever you are testing. A beep means a continuous path. No beep, or "OL", means the path is broken.
- Fuse: remove it, probe each end. Beep means intact.
- Switch: disconnect it, probe both terminals. It should beep in one position and not the other.
- Extension lead: unplug it, probe the same pin at both ends. No beep means a broken conductor.
- Appliance element: unplug it, probe across the element terminals. No beep means the element has failed.
Continuity is measured with the power OFF and the component disconnected. The meter sends its own tiny current through the item to test it. Applying mains voltage to a meter set to resistance can destroy it and is genuinely dangerous. Power off, always.
The Mistakes That Kill Meters
Two of these damage the instrument. The rest just give you wrong answers.
- Red probe left in the 10A socket while measuring voltage. This is a direct short through the meter. It is the number-one cause of dead multimeters.
- Measuring resistance on a live circuit. Power off, component disconnected, no exceptions.
- Holding the metal probe tips. Your body becomes part of the circuit and the reading goes strange, or worse.
- Wrong range on a manual meter. "OL" or a lone 1 means the range is too low, not that the item is faulty.
- Testing resistance with the item still in circuit. Other paths around the component give a false reading.
- Trusting a flat meter battery. A dying internal battery produces plausible but wrong numbers. If readings drift, change it.
What to Buy
For household use, a $25 to $40 auto-ranging meter from a recognized brand is ample. What matters more than features is the CAT rating printed on the meter: it describes the transient voltage the instrument is built to survive. For mains work in a house, look for CAT III 600 V.
Very cheap unbranded meters often carry a printed CAT rating with no testing behind it. Given that the whole point is protection while working on live mains, this is a poor place to save fifteen dollars.
Common questions
What setting do I use to test an outlet?
AC volts, the V with a wavy line, V~. On a manual-ranging meter choose the 200 V range. A working US outlet reads roughly 110 to 125 volts between the hot and neutral slots.
What does OL mean on a multimeter?
Over limit. On a resistance or continuity test it means no complete path. A blown fuse or a broken wire. On a voltage test it means the range you selected is too low for what you are measuring.
Can I test continuity with the power on?
No. The meter supplies its own small current to measure resistance, and putting mains voltage into it on that setting can destroy the meter and injure you. Always power off and disconnect the component first.
Why does my multimeter read 0 when testing a battery?
Usually the dial is on AC volts rather than DC. Batteries are DC, the V with a straight line. Also check the red probe is in the VΩmA socket rather than the current socket.
What CAT rating do I need for home electrical work?
CAT III 600 V is the sensible minimum for working on household mains. The rating describes the voltage transient the meter is built to survive, and it is the specification worth paying for.
